Hockey's origins date back to the mid-19th century in Canada, where British soldiers and settlers introduced various stick-and-ball games. The modern version emerged in the 1870s, with the first official rules published in 1877. The National Hockey Association (NHA) formed in 1909, paving the way for the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1917.
